about - lizleggett

Liz Leggett’s paintings and drawings range from abstract and representational to the space in-between, where forms and images are suggested but left open for a multitude of interpretations and meanings. Utilizing vibrant colors, expressionist mark making and a material application that is both haphazard and controlled, her technical practice is open to material accidents. The paint is encouraged to move and fall where it may within its own physical nature to allow for spontaneous form to take shape. These areas may then be refined to develop the picture’s subject and composition. This play between a painting's abstraction and recognizability is of particular interest to Liz. It is this open-ended space that can reveal a range of impressions, emotions and sensibilities that extend meaning to a broad audience.

Liz's work has been exhibited nationally and internationally and she has participated in artist-in-residence programs in Israel, Spain, The Pyrenees Mountains, Saratoga Springs and most recently at Weir Farm in Wilton, Connecticut. She received her BS in Studio Art from Skidmore College and MFA at the Maine College of Art. Liz has been a guest lecturer, participated on discussion panels, taught painting and has received awards and grants for her work. She lives with her husband and two sons in Westport, Connecticut.
